Split Boot - True Network-Based Booting on Heterogeneous MPSoCs

In the context of High-Luminosity (HL) upgrade LHC, many custom ATCA electronics boards are being designed containing heterogeneous System-on-Chip (SoC) devices, more specifically Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ (ZUS+) family. While application varies greatly, these devices regularly used for performing board management tasks, making them a fundamental element in correct operation board. The large number hundreds SoC creates significant challenges their firmware deployment, maintenance, and accessibility. Even though U-Boot on ZUS+ supports network boot through Preboot Execution Environment (PXE), standard process contains application-specific information at earlier steps, particularly within First Stage Bootloader (FSBL). This prevents initialization several from universal image. Inspired by PXE desktop PCs, this paper describes split boot, novel method tailored to specific needs ZUS+. All configuration is moved storage device automatically fetched during process. We considered entire process, software development binary distribution large-scale system. developed nicely integrates with toolset workflow.
